Jeremiah is a lonely figure with a surprising message. He encourages the people to surrender to Babylon, and smashes a clay jar to symbolize the death and destruction they will face if they remain in their cities and fight. He would have been seen as a traitor by many, but his calling was to be a “fortified wall of bronze” that the people break themselves against.

Along with all his bad news, Jeremiah promises that God will one day rescue and save Jerusalem.

“I will make you a wall to this people,
    a fortified wall of bronze;
they will fight against you
    but will not overcome you,
for I am with you
    to rescue and save you,”
declares the LORD.
