Have you ever thought that following God could look like treason? We saw that with the revivals of Hezekiah and Josiah—but they were rebelling against foreign powers. Jeremiah surprised everyone with a very unpatriotic message about Judah and Jerusalem. That’s what caused so much anger.

Hopefully this lesson got you thinking about our truest citizenship in heaven and to remember that God calls us to express our deepest loyalty to His kingdom. Maybe going down that path has cost you popularity or put you at risk in other ways. Jeremiah is a reminder that we have to hold on to what we know to be true, because what we see around us is not the most important reality.

Next we’ll look at more of the conditions that brought Jeremiah such grief.
