We’ve noted the difficulties of interpreting apocalyptic and prophetic literature. Passages like those in Daniel make it easy to get a little too interested in the “code-breaking” aspect of Bible reading.

One scholar famously referred to the history of the exegesis of Daniel’s seventy weeks as “the Dismal Swamp of Old Testament criticism,” where many thinkers get lost without emerging with anything of value. Getting lost in the “code” of these kinds of passages in Daniel can also become the “Dismal Swamp” of our relationship with God. We can get caught up doing math when we should be looking for God.

  1. Have there been times where you were more interested in decoding the Bible than in hearing God’s voice? Have you been distracted by some of the Bible’s more obscure nuances, and missed the clear calling to remain true to YHWH and follow Jesus?
