Jerusalem would be in jeopardy during transitions in power, when efforts to secure trade made the city an enticing target. Zechariah (chs 9, 12 and 14) describes unsuccessful onslaughts from the nations that try to penetrate YHWH’s defenses.

The Mount of Olives is a ridge that runs north and south to the east of Jerusalem. An escape attempt over the ridge would leave those fleeing vulnerable, unless it were split (Zechariah 14:4). This would enable water to flow through the opening in the ridge (Zechariah 14:8).

The security and prosperity of Jerusalem would encourage worshipers from other nations to celebrate festivals in Jerusalem. Zechariah 14:16 describes worshipers coming to dwell in tents for the Feast of Tabernacles (or Sukkot) without fear of attack.
