To take to heart the warnings of God’s prophecy and to obey his warnings.

“Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; whoever is discerning, let him know them. For the ways of the Lord are right, and the righteous will walk in them, but the transgressors will stumble in them.” Hosea 14:9
This verse is a flashing yellow light for the reader. It tells us to precede with caution. We are to read Hosea’s words as a source of wisdom and discernment. This verse is a red stamp that flags the reader to stop and carefully consider what they have just read.
Hosea’s book contrasts the blessings God has ready for the obedient with the impending curses for those who forsake Him. Hosea harkens back to Moses’ words in Deuteronomy when God made His promises for the future of His people. The nation of Israel had been birthed with the blessings of God. She had forsaken the true God to worship false gods and had experienced God’s judgement in response.
Hosea’s words remind his readers that God is faithful to His promises, both good and bad. He cites examples of Israel’s failures in faithfulness and uses those examples in instructing Judah to turn from the path she had taken in her own hypocritical worship.
Hosea’s words are of value to believers today as well as ancient Judah. Christ expects the same purity of His bride, the church, as God expected of ancient Israel. The modern church can fall under God’s judgement just as His people, the nation of Israel did. Through the words of this book the church is called to repentance and promised the hope of a restored relationship with Him.

God’s love is eternal and He wants us to repent of our sins so that we will be redeemed and perfected in the “latter days” when Christ returns.

To showman that the prophecy of Hosea would be the representation; of a people that was unrighteous,

but the goodness of God would still out reign our sins against him.

God’s call for Hosea to marry a wife of whoredom was to portray Israel’s unfaithfulness to its covenant with God.

The instructed marriage was to highlight, emphasize Israel’s idolatary, moving away from God to the nation.

Throughout the Old Testament God portrayed His relationship with the people of Israel as a marriage. In terms of human communication this depiction revealed God’s deep love for Israel. It also communicated God’s desire for an intimate relationship with His people and His longing for Israel’s complete faithfulness to Him. Since a marriage relationship is a covenant relationship, this type of relationship accurately reflected the covenant relationship between God and His people.

Gomer’s role as a temple prostitute symbolized Israel’s adulterous relationships with false gods. In marrying Gomer, Hosea became the husband of a whore. This marriage illustrated God’s assessment of what His relationship with Israel had become.
Hosea’s heartbreaking marriage to Gomer gave the prophet personal knowledge of the pain Israel had caused and continued to cause God. Hosea’s personal grief influenced his message to both Israel and Judah and prepared him to deliver the message God had for His people. His heartache fired a passion for his message that could not be ignited any other way.

Hosea’s marriage served as a sermon in and of itself to those around him. Not only did it communicate the grief Israel had caused God, but it showed Israel just how unworthy they were to be chosen by God as His covenant people. When Hosea reclaimed Gomer after she had returned to prostitution, he was illustrating the faithfulness of God. God through Hosea’s human act was communicating the hope of restoration to His people.

To teach about the idolatry that Israel has committed and God’s everlasting love
