Of all the things that were destroyed or twisted by what we call “the Fall,” what grieves you the most? Is it personal or systemic sin in our world? Is it the profound levels of shame you see around us … or feel inside? Is it the tragic human suffering that comes not only at the hands of others but also as a result of sickness, disease and death? Is it the presence of the devil—deceiving, slandering and subverting God’s good work? There’s certainly a lot to mourn. And what we feel is so much less than the grief God experiences. And yet, isn’t it amazing to see his resolve to stay engaged and to redeem his creation and his creatures?

Unfortunately, things are not going to improve as we move into the next lesson. But where there is God, there is always hope.
