Wrap-Up

Zechariah gave his community more to think about than they could fully appreciate. He continued to put the focus of messianic expectation on the Davidic throne and the Jerusalem temple. Although the temple is now built, and we have a Davidic governor, we won’t have that messianic King for centuries. 

Israel’s Shepherd Ruler will come into Jerusalem riding on a donkey, but without explanation, He will be pierced by His own people. His sheep will be scattered. The prediction of global worship of the one true God in Zion is now pushed out to a later time, following a major global confrontation.

That’s pretty much how Zechariah concludes. He offers a vision that requires living in the “now and not yet”—which is actually quite a bit like our own experience today.
