Objective: To begin to appreciate the main themes and interrelatedness of the Bible, the relevance of its ancient cultural context and the contemporary implications of each of its parts. These questions are to be answered at the completion of the lessons for each book, providing an opportunity to summarize your observations while reading and engaging the exercises and lectures.
Note: We are having you answer the guiding questions across this group of minor prophets (Obadiah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi) rather than for each book.
- What have these books revealed about God? Include metaphors, characteristics and the mission of God as it unfolds.
- What have these books revealed about God’s people, their relationship with God and each other and their role and mission in the world? Include metaphors, mission, ethics, worship, “living by faith,” etc.
- How do these Old Testament books anticipate the New Testament? Include typology, promises, predictions and the overall history of redemption.
- How would you describe the uniqueness of these books in their ancient Near Eastern literary and cultural context? Take into account the genres of Scripture and comparisons with extra-biblical parallels. Consider the divine and human dimensions of God’s Word. (This essay will take some time over the three Old Testament courses to fully understand.)
- In what ways has God spoken to you in your journey through these books?
