Knowingly or unknowingly we all put our faith in something. When I go to bed at night I have faith or trust that I will awake the following morning. As well, I put my faith in my car that it would start and take me to my destination. But this faith is not lasting. One day I may not wake up or even go to bed or my car would not start. However, the faith that brings about real joy comes from the way God has wired in us, and it’s not until we have an encounter with the God of scripture, this unknown God that Paul referred to, can we begin to know Him through this miracle called faith.

Because we are all spiritual beings, we tend to worship something. That could be ourselves, our careers, our money, our relationships, etc. Whatever we tend to worship becomes our god, which is really false gods and our lives can never be fully satisfied unless we encounter the One and only True God of the Bible.

If people realized they exercised so much faith, they may choose to examine and scrutinize that belief system more than they think they have if at all.

Gods in their own image – makes them feel a bit more than what they actually are. Then pride creeps in, and that leads to a multitude of downfalls.

Some people believe at times , others choose believe what they want to believe what they want to believe.

Throughout time people have made up gods to follow. Why do we do this, i think people intrinsically need something to follow. We understand something we create, whether its a golden calf, or the bank account we’re striving to build. What we place before ourselves is a tangible reality. A God who is above all living things requires faith to follow..

I think if people became aware of how much they continually exercise faith in their daily lives, they would understand what faith really is. Then, I think if they understood what faith really is, they would be more open to believing in a God they cannot see or prove. I think the key in allowing oneself to believe in God is truly understanding what faith is. I think people making gods in their own image is significant for two reasons. First, the gods would agree with, or be favorable towards, all the things the people agree with or are favorable towards. The gods would support the individual’s viewpoint. Secondly, the gods would be limited by the person creating them. Humans are finite and fallible – and gods created by them would also be finite and fallible. Therefore, the gods are really no more powerful than a human and will be no better than a human.

Christian Learning Center Forums Why do those who are anti-religious seem to be unaware of their own exercise of faith? What rationalizations might secular people use to defend their views?

I think a lot of it is basic selfishness and idolatry. As stated in the lecture video, we make God into our likeness and what we want Him to be to serve our needs and wants. Most that I know who reject God is because they think it will mean giving God control over their life which would result in a life they don’t want. My own sister says, “If I can’t listen to my music then I can’t be a Christian.” She cares more about being able to listen to music that she loves then loving her Creator. She’s totally missing out due to a misunderstanding of what having a relationship and faith in God would mean for her daily life. I’ve told her it doesn’t mean she can’t listen to “her music” at all, but that’s what she learned from other Christians and she can’t let go of it.

Faith has been delagated to only be associated with religion. Secular people might defend their view by only “believing” with their eyes.

One, I think God has given them up to their own depravity so they are blinded to the fact. Second, they believe that “faith” is something of a weakness that they dont want to succumb to, and so the things that could be seen as faith in their daily life they would refuse to acknowledge that. Faith is a crutch or a weakness, that they are enough, that there is no proof or evidence for a God.

Many secular people don’t see that they have faith because they are good at finding evidence to support what they believe. Unfortunately for them this evidence often comes from the beliefs of others is not scientifically or otherwise well founded.

They are unaware because it’s language they are used to using in relation to a religion and not in relation to everyday tasks. They would rationalize it as they currently are; by creating new nomenclature to describe their actions which in reality are a form of faith.
