I find that many people view faith as only a religious term. Sitting in a chair is one thing, but believing in something you cannot see is another. However, all of life is an act of faith. It is intrinsic to our design! If people would indeed come to grasp that aspect, it would not be as hard to have faith in God as our Creator and Sustainer. However, we live in a sin-cursed and fallen world where many eyes have been blinded to the truth. As stated in Romans 1 – they begin to worship the Creation rather than the Creator. This includes ourselves! It goes back to the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve were tempted to become like God – knowing good and evil. When that choice was made, the innate part of our being began to see ourselves as a god.

If people became more aware of the fact that faith is a daily part of life, I think it would make them more open to faith in that which they cannot see outside themselves. People do tend to make gods in their own image. Gods to them, look like them, they are a reflection of their own beliefs. This is significant because it shows that people want to believe in something, but that they want to believe in what they want to be true. They want a belief in God to reflect themselves in some way.

I think that maybe more people would be open to the idea of faith in God because they would be more accepting of the word faith and the idea that you have to have faith in something. The significance of people making gods in their own image is the fact that people see good within them and within other people so they create a god that reflects that. They also create a god that allows them to do things that they want to do or believe that is not a bad thing. People want a god that reflects exactly what they want it to.

It should open their eyes to the fact that we all exercise a faith. When people make gods in their own image, there is no consistancy and no balance; it is chaos.

I think that many people believe that having faith is just a “christian” thing. They do not realize how often and what a large part of their day happens with having faith and trusting things in the world around them. If people stopped to think of faith in a day to day type of way, it might not be such a scary idea.

Christian Learning Center Forums Why do those who are anti-religious seem to be unaware of their own exercise of faith? What rationalizations might secular people use to defend their views?

People who are unaware of their own exercises of faith believe they are in control. Most people want to control their surroundings/lives. To give faith to the unseen is more difficult for many people.

HOW OFTEN IN CONVERSATIONS DOES THE WORD FAITH COME UP? SELDOM. WHATEVER THE SITUATION, IT’S AN ASSUMED ACTION.. CERTAINLY PEOPLE WHO DO NOT BELIEVE IN GOD BELIEVE THAT THEIR INTERACTIONS WITHIN DAILY OPERATIONS OF LIVING ARE BASED ON MAN’S CREATIONS OR DEVELOPMENTS. IT’S SUPPOSE TO REACT IN A GIVEN MANNER BECAUSE OF SCIENTIFIC/TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS WHICH MAKES THE PERSON EXPECTS CERTAIN PERFORMACES OR OUTCOMES. NOT OPERATING ON FAITH.

People who are anti-religious might seem to be unaware of their own exercise of faith because they feel as though they have control over everything. Often times when life is going smoothly and as planned, people think they do not need God. People often feel that they can control what goes on in their lives so they do not need to depend on God for guidance/help/support/strength/etc. Secular people might rationalize that “if I work hard enough” or “do things the right way” then everything should work out. It seems as if a secular person might believe they have the power to “will something into existence”.

Anti-religious people seem to think that “faith” is merely an exercise in belief in a deity or deities. Faith is something exercised every day in many fashions. Faith, as scripture tells us, is the essence of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen. When the stoplight turns green, we have faith that traffic coming from our left or right will yield and allow us through. We don’t really think about it, we just have faith that the traffic system installed will work and all will adhere to the rules. When we stop and think about it, we have so many things that we cannot control or even influence, we simply walk day by day in faith that we will once again make it through unscathed.

Secular people rationalize that they are logical and therefor grounded in “reality”. They will believe only if they see. They will look for holes in our defense of a creator that cannot be answered with absolute certainty as “evidence” to support their worldview. In reality, they are truly just proving that anything they put faith in is illogical by their own definition, including that traffic lights will work or that they will even emerge as alive from the night’s slumber.

Anti-religious people may associate faith with religion or God. Therefore, they are unaware of the daily ways that they exercise faith such as trusting in traffic lights and the safety of elevators. They may rationalize their “daily faith” by noting that the traffic lights and elevators work the majority of the times. However, this does not mean they always do or will. So, it requires faith.
