We are called to always be ready to defend our faith and give an answer as to why we believe in Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Apologetics helps to prepare us for our mission to share the good news with people.
-
According to I Peter 3:15-16, we are to embrace apologetics with gentleness and respect and with a clear conscience.
-
Why? Because people will as when they see us living differently. I have been asked on numerous occasions why I can be at peace when my world seems to be crashing around me (on the brink of homelessness), or why I am not angry with God because I have cancer. I have been able to use what Scripture has revealed to me about Who God is to share a perspective they just cannot grasp and are baffled. It has given opportunity to be His witness and to share His heart with others who are seeking meaning in their own lives as well.
How? Always with gentleness and through love that can only come from closeness with Adonai, Abba! I take the time to show that I understand why they question my attitude, my beliefs. I then gently show them why I hold the beliefs and attitudes that I do. Through God’s faithfulness and His heart, I know whose I am, who I am, and my identity and life purpose flows from all that God has revealed to me.

First, we need to be humble, respectful, and loving with reverence as we explain our reasons for believing what we do in Jesus Christ due to how He has come into our lives and why we want to study, praise, and worship our Lord God in a way where others will want what we have in Jesus Christ.

This passage captures three main points: 1) Always be prepared to share and defend the faith to those who see the Christian light burning inside you. As a witness in action, exhibiting the fruits of righteousness, always be ready to provide testimony with your mouth. 2) Share that testimony with “gentleness and respect” to those who are willing to listen… and 3) To those who may utter words against our Christian testimony and mock our Christ-honoring actions, demonstrate a Christlike behavior that honors God and exposes the slanderer’s negative behavior that will an awareness of shame for doing so.

Explaining and supporting through logic and reason the Christian Faith and world view.
-
It is the defense of Christianity, with the goal of bringing people to Christ. It does not ignore reality.
-
Groothuis argues that apologetics is “the defense of Christianity as objectively true, compellingly rational, and pertinent to all of life” (Lecture 1). Apologetics, or the practice thereof, is the call of every Christian (1st Peter 3:15). It is rooted in an understanding and reverence of God and His Word, as well as a logical representation of how God’s truth aligns with reality. Apologetics is not divorced from reality, nor purely experiential. It is not sanctimonious, nor represented in an approach/conversation that fails to point people toward Biblical truth.
-
It’s a defense of what you believe. It’s not going around and apologizing for what you believe.
-
Apologetics is the defense of Christianity as objectively true, compellingly rational, and pertinent to the whole of life. Apologetic is not about establishing an intellectual faith. Apologetics is not about eliminating all trace of mystery within the Christian faith.

What is the purpose of defending truth?

The purpose of defending the truth is a command of GOD. Most importantly God wants us too. Jesus was always pointing his disciples and the religious leaders to the truth. You can’t personally make someone believe differently. It takes power of the Holy Spirit and through the faithfulness of prayer on our part. God wants us to stand up for truth.
-
Considering there is only one truth–not a postmodernism truth vs. traditional, etc. The truth has been written in our hearts by the creator. Apologetics is about coming to terms with the fact that the justification for the truth of the gospel is just that: it is the truth, scientifically, historically, empirically, and moralistically psychologically. Defending God’s truth is defending the only truth and ministering to a confused and lost world.
-
First, we as Christians must know the truth which is the Word of God. Then the purpose of defending the truth is not only to defend certain ideas but is also an invitation to a new life.
