It is important to realize that the book of Revelation is apocalyptic , visionary, prophetic and written as a letter to Christians under persecution. We today cannot understand what John described when he wrote of the beast with seven heads, when told of visions regarding the woman and the dragon, prophesied, I believe, that Christians win in the end and that’s really all I need to know. It doesn’t really matter which part is foretelling and which part is forthtelling because it has a wonderful ending and I’m on the right side. I’ll bet the early church was very happy to receive the letter.

It has helped me see Revelation in a new light, to not be fearful of it, to think of when it was written and why it was written.

The book of Revelation was written for us to understand and apply to our lives. What I have learned from the lecture is that it written in a style that addresses current events in the 1st century in symbolic way for impact.

By understanding the book of Revelation, I can begin to understand who God is. The best way to know God is to study his word, the Bible. As a Christian, I should want to study and know his word. Many people shy away from Revelation because of its symbolism which can be difficult to understand.

Having a definition of something is the first step in understanding it. The lecture was the first step in decoding Revelations. Knowing that it has parts and time can be taken to look at and study them is a means of simplifying the book.

To understand what the writer is trying to convey we must understand the readers situation and world view. The readers in this case were first century Christians being persecuted by the Roman Empire.
I can better understand by attempting to form my world view to conform to first century people. -
It is helpful to know John’s purpose and the context in which it would have been understood. Knowing that the first readers would have seen the imagery symbolizing things in their world makes it more approachable. Recognizing and understanding this dynamic can help make sense of what is written, as well as help guard against misinterpreting the text.
Learning more about the historical context helps me place it more in line with other Scriptures.

So that the context of who and when it was written is applied to our understanding of what John is revealing to us, where we may then associate and apply these truths of God’s sovereignty to our own situations and circumstances that we face in our own time.

Need to understand the current historical/political environment of the time John wrote the letter/book. I had not looked at Revelation as being historical until now.

As with any book in the Bible the context helps us to understand what was happening in the time of writing to better understand who the author was writing and the message he is trying to portray…..
