I think we tend to look at portion of the Bible and say, “that wasn’t talking about me” or “that doesn’t apply to me”. Knowing who the Sermon on the Mount was directed to, helps us know that Jesus was talking about his followers.

Jesus is making it real. This is the reality of righteousness minus compromises. He not only verbalized these principles but demonstrated them in his life. He teaches us how to think about life and the importance of basic decency. The challenge is real. Whoever has my commands and obeys them. He is the one who loves me…
Our human condition is the barrier and he is redirecting our thoughts to go and sin no more as becoming part of His kingdom, rather than waging war on the Roman empire. We will later learn how enormous this spiritual warfare can be but Jesus is setting the bar. He is showing us his clear message and benchmark for our journey!

I truly believe that the Sermon on the Mount teaching were meant for Jesus’ followers, which were countercultural to the norms of society. He is giving to those who are mourning and hurting. He is giving peace to all who choose to follow Him.

It’s necessary for us to know that these apply to all disciples, not just those in ministry and leadership positions.
