A large island in the Mediterranean Sea. Lying southeast of the Greek mainland, it forms the southern boundary of the Aegean Sea, together with Cythera on the northwest and Carpathos and Rhodes on the northeast. It is about 156 miles from west to east and varies from eight to thirty-five miles in breadth.
