As we’ve seen, the ends of Paul’s letters often summarize key principles from throughout the text. Just as the introductory prayer in Philemon signaled the tone for the rest of the letter to come, 1 Timothy closes with two verses that refer back to a number of key words from the body of the letter that encapsulate themes from the letter:

Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith.

Grace be with you all. 1 Timothy 6:20-21 NIV

We can map the connections between these last two verses and the rest of the letter like this.

  1. Charting out these comparisons can be helpful for remembering the different letters and their messages. In your own voice, summarize Paul’s message to Timothy in a few brief sentences, using each of the terms from the previous chart: guard, turn away, godless, knowledge, entrusted, profess, faith, depart.

Make the message personal, for someone you know who needs to hear it.
