After the customary salutation, 1 Peter begins with a comment on inheritance:

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Peter 1:3-5 (NIV)

We saw a similar focus on inheritance in Hebrews but, as we know, this theme is much older than the church. We can trace it to Genesis and God’s promises to the patriarchs.

However, there need be no poor people among you, for in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you. (Deut 15:4, NIV)

 		Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. (Matt 5:5, NIV)
Then the King will say to those on his right, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.” (Matt 25:34, NIV)
