By tracking language of inheritance in the passages from the previous exercise, we’re able to see gradations in the theme of inheritance as it develops in the Bible. At the time Peter is writing, the inheritance that began with “the land” has expanded to include “the earth” and even “the kingdom of God.” This inheritance “can never perish, spoil or fade” and is “kept in heaven” (1:4) for us. 

We’ll see this language again in the second-to-last chapter of the Bible, in a message Peter’s audience would have welcomed:

I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God . . . And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them . . . ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away . . .”

[He who was seated on the throne] said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.”
