Lesson Overview
This lesson prepares you to more effectively study each New Testament book. You will gain insight into the historical setting in which the New Testament characters lived and to which the books were addressed. You will begin to work with four questions that serve as guidelines for studying each book.
Lesson Objectives
When you complete this lesson, you should be able to:
- Explain the Greek influence that pervaded Palestine in the inter-testamental period.
- Discuss the political climate in Palestine just prior to the birth of Christ.
- Describe the cultural/political issues that existed between the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
- Explain the political issues between the Herodians and the Zealots in the First century.
- Describe the social conditions that existed in Palestine at the time of Jesus’ birth.
Personal Reflection
As you proceed through this lesson have the following question in mind.
Summarize briefly the political and social changes that occurred in the Middle East between the Old and New Testaments. How does this understanding affect your view of the events recorded in the Gospels?
