If we understand the role of a shepherd, that is the protection, care and leadership that he brings, then we can see that Jesus, as the good Shepherd, does the same for us.

Jesus, the Good Shepherd, is Lord. And the Lord is MY shepherd. I shall not want.
I think of my comfortable home with running water and sanitation, mode of transportation, roads, etc. and it makes me appreciate even more when I read Psalm 23 that the good shepherd wrote it in conditions far more harsh than what I experience. Yet, He still promises to supply our needs as we trust in, and rely upon, Him. This lesson was helpful for me to understand the Psalm 23 context so much better.

In seeking to understand the message of any passage of Scripture, context is indispensable. The terrain, in so many cases, is an important part of the context. The geography is used to establish a link of insight between the physical and spiritual realms. “Just as a literal shepherd pastors his flock, the Lord pastors me.” He is always leading me in the wilderness and providing every need along the way. I can trust Him just as a sheep or goat trusts the faithful shepherd.

Geography of the biblical land reveals the character of the land. It gives me a picture how those people lives in those environment and what they face, challenges and dangers they encounter, including the goodness or fertile or lush full of the land versus the wilderness environment. It gives us an awareness how we can take things especially good and blessed environment for granted and forget where we were before like Israelites came out of wilderness into promised land and overtime forget about the goodness of God.
