We have said before that Genesis presents the Creation account in two movements. The first movement places humanity in the order and architecture of the whole creation. The second provides a more detailed look at our original relationship with our Creator. Still, the most striking description of that relationship may be in the first movement, where male and female are said to be made “in the image of God.”

Read the two movements, found in Genesis 2:4-25 and Genesis 1:27-31, and address the following questions:

  1. How do these two accounts complement each other? Is there an equivalent idea to the word “image” in the second account?
  1. Jot down any variations of emphasis, language or tone between the two accounts.
  1. What purpose might explain the two-part account?
