If the world started off so right, how could it have gone so wrong? We’ve seen the origin of the world, of human life, of good relationships and good work. But what lies at the beginning of sin, of shame, of suffering and death? And how does God respond? Only with judgment? Only with mercy?

Genesis 3 presents us with that epic hinge in the storyline—a turning-point that explains why the world-that-is is not the world-that-was-meant-to-be. In this catastrophic crisis, we catch a glimpse of a hopeful light that will burn throughout Scripture—even in the darkest moments.

There’s a lot to reckon with in this chapter, and it won’t be easy going if we take it seriously. But there’s no other way to the rest of the Bible than down this path.
