The royal aspect of the biblical Messiah was the one everyone was ready for. When Jesus came, He was very different, in some respects, from what people anticipated. He came later than people expected, and instead of taking on rule as omnipotent king, He died in humiliation.

  1. Are you also more comfortable with a king who will avenge you and overpower your enemies? It is likely that we are disappointed that Christ is not reigning in ways that would make our lives more acceptable. Write an honest response to the idea that we still struggle with the kind of royal servant that Jesus Christ is.
  1. Now consider what there is about a Messiah who suffers alongside you that a lofty, powerful king can’t provide. Have you encountered your Messiah in moments of pain and loss? Reflect on the positive side of our Messiah’s humiliation and weakness.
