Esther is kind of like the “girl next door” who becomes famous. No one really knew what she was capable of—not even her. And that says a lot to all of us about what to expect from ourselves and each other. Esther changed, and we are all called to change. She became a model of courage and competence … and that’s amazing.

But let’s not forget that these great traits were developed as her people were put at risk. She rose to the occasion not because of personal ambition but because of collective danger. While the story of Esther gives us a lot to remember about both Esther and Mordecai as heroic individuals, it is a story about God’s people. It’s a story celebrated by a community every year because, through these two, God rescued His chosen people.
