As a young nun in Kolkata, India, Mother Teresa took notice of beggars dying from malnutrition outside the Kali temple. She sought permission to use an abandoned building nearby that had also been a temple to the Hindu goddess named “Kali.” She obtained permission on her birthday in 1952. The Kalighat Hospice for the Dying Destitutes of Kolkata was founded.

This hospice continues to offer free care. It’s one of nine locations where volunteers from all over the world bring hope to those in desperate need. In the words of Mother Teresa, “There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread, but there are many more dying for a little love.”
