Be an athlete myself, I think finding common ground is so important. Then, I would be slow to speak but quick to listen. Next, I would find myself available to help meet a need. I would provide prayer time with a Biblical lesson that would be practical.

Many of these athletes will commonly have transactional relationships, so we can step in with meaningful relationships, in Jesus name, which may allow us to share with them the best news ever!

Building meaningful relationships with the athletes we serve/plan to serve is crucial. They are willing to share their struggles, joys, and questions only if they trust you. As we learn in this lesson, it takes time to build a relationship, and trust takes time to be earned. They do not care how much we know; they only deal with people they trust, love, and care for. They can find encouragement, support, and accountability through relationships with such people.

On the other hand, without solid and meaningful relationships, we are unlikely to do well and lose the opportunity to care for their Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual health.

Jesus provided a beautiful model of relationships, through the disciples. He found “common ground”. He displayed a genuine “care” for their needs and that of their families. He was consistent in His relationship with them; walking though life with them, mentoring, and teaching. He taught them through example how to communicate well, and how to build “community”. I want to be invested in the lives of my students, and their families… this goes far beyond the walls of a gym or school.

Without strong relationships, we lose all support for our ministry, as we will not have the trust or even the opportunity to share with each other.

Community would be where I believe I have the most growth opportunity as the athletes that I serve are only here for a couple months out of the year. The changes that I can make is by inviting them to be a part of something here so that ties to the community are grown and cultivated.

First of all, I love this presentation. I think that what stands out to me is Community. For the most part, I have been hesitant because I did not want to violate boundaries. However, the one time that I did reach out and invite a player to church she showed up.
I need to take more risks in this area.

I am in a ministry where we may only see each other 10-12 times a year. It is very important to utilize all of the Cs. I feel like Consistency and Community are very important. With limited time there is limited opportunities. If I can be consistent during my time with them, it will allow me to help them with Community if when I am not “near by” or away from the playing field.

I here believe that as Chaplains/ Sports ministers ; We need to be more recognize the that The Common Ground and Connectivity is more than the Occupation that they perform for compensation. One personal history manifestation of this is how 2. Baseball players were able to be influential in Ohio in moving a T.V. Journalist from that role into being a E.L.C.A. Bishop administratively over 172 Congregrations in the N.E. Geography of the state. CLE, Ohio. 013123.
