We may tend to think of biblical prophecies as completely original inspiration, but it often involves references to earlier Scripture. When Mary visits Elizabeth in Luke 1 she gives a powerful song (or speech) about her pregnancy. See some of the Old Testament cross references to Mary’s song in the table below.
Mary’s song (ESV) | Old Testament |
My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.(vv 46-48) | 1 Samuel 2:1-10 Psalm 25:5 1 Samuel 1:11 |
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.(vv 48-49) | Psalm 113:5-6 Deuteronomy 10:21 Psalm 111:9 |
And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.(v 50) | Psalm 103:17 |
He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;(v 51) | Psalm 89:11 |
He has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate;(v 52) | 1 Samuel 2:4,7 |
He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.(v 53) | Psalm 107:9 1 Samuel 2:5 Job 22:9 |
He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,(v 54) | Isaiah 41:8-9 Psalm 98:3 |
As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.(v 55) | Micah 7:20 |
