It’s hard to wait for God’s judgment on those who abuse other people, especially when its government sponsored terrorism. And it’s always hard for us to be patient when we are the ones experiencing suffering and shame. But God’s timetable eventually puts everyone in their places.

So we’ve had a chance to witness the astonishing offer of forgiveness to the cruelest empire imaginable in Jonah. This was followed about 100 years later by a message of comfort that God would finally bring vengeance on this same nation. Hopefully we can find comfort in the messages of both prophets because, as we’ve seen, the line between good and evil runs through the heart of every single one of us.
