Are they meant only for a certain chosen group, are they to be used to political objectives, are they a guide to morality for the whole world, or are they specifically meant for ME?? Dr. Bloomberg asserts that the sermon is an example of “already but not yet”, and in Pennington’s words, “a model for human flourishing” meant for God’s people in community, the Church. Knowing to whom the Sermon is directed gives us a clearer idea of its meaning for us as individuals in the larger body of the church.

These Beatitudes have been given by Jesus speaking to his followers. They are instruction for Christian living. If they are to apply to the church and community it gives us direction as followers of Christ. Over time it appears that these instructions have been influenced by other historical viewpoints and the focus has shifted throughout church history. However, Jesus was speaking to the crowds made up of followers and non-believers and he was sending a message. To be a follower we have to hear and follow what he has preached.

We should not read exclusivity into the beatitudes, but rather an everlasting lesson for all of us.

It is important to understand Jesus’ original audience so that we cannot dismiss His words based upon our personal opinions and convictions. Many groups throughout the world have attempted to suggest Jesus was only speaking to priests due to the strict nature of His sermons.

I think it is important to understand who the Beatitudes apply to because in order to really understand them. I think they were addressed to everyone and they were showing how and what it meant to be a Christian and follower of Christ.
