Lesson Overview

This lesson is the first of two studies on the general epistles; this lesson focusing on James and 1 Peter. These books, though written by different authors and at different times, address many of the same themes as they help their readers live superlative Christian lives under various pressures that would discourage them.

Lesson Objectives

When you complete this lesson, you should be able to do the following:

  • Discuss issues of authorship, date, and audiences of James and 1 Peter.
  • Explain how a Christian, living under various discouraging pressures and opposition, can live by faith in God’s grace and peace.
  • Name three themes found in James and discuss how he develops them in his book.
  • Name and discuss three themes presented in 1 Peter.
  • Generate a list of biblical principles to guide your daily walk with God.
Personal Reflection

As you proceed through this lesson have the following question in mind.
What do the books of James and 1 Peter teach believers about how to respond to suffering? Do you agree with Dr. Blomberg that resisting the injustice of the world with violence is wrong? Why or why not?
