With the possible exception of Genesis 1:1, John 3:16 is (at least for Christians) the most recognizable sentence in the Bible. This passage and the one that follows make a powerful statement about God’s love for the world and his commitment to saving it:
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:16-17 NIV
With this in mind, some of the “anti-world” rhetoric we hear in John’s gospel and letters may surprise us, but it’s central to his message and important that we come to terms with it.
- Read the passages below and offer an explanation of these passages with reference to John 3:16.
