Unlike 3 John, this letter uses no personal names. The intimate language of “love” and “loving one another” seems an unlikely way for the apostle to speak to an individual female believer. John’s use of the word “children” in other contexts that clearly refer to believers in a general sense, rather than as members of a specific biological family, also suggests that in 2 John he is not addressing members of a specific family household.
