We value individuality in a way that is foreign to the ancient world. Our assumption that God’s inspiration of one person is somehow more direct, or more authentic, than His inspiration of a community is a modern one. 

And this communal emphasis is in line with what we know of the Bible’s metanarrative, where God is not merely calling individuals but a people—communities who live in communion with Him.
