Every culture has its own way of defining and embodying honor and shame. We’ve learned about an ancient empire’s way of defining honor and shame—honor for the powerful and brutal, shame for the weak and conquered. Yet, Nahum warned of retributive judgment coming upon that empire from YHWH. 

  1. What are the dynamics of honor and shame in your world: your family, your neighborhood, your school or company, etc.?

God often expresses a different value system within the cultural dynamics of honor and shame. 

  1. Read 1 Corinthians 1:26-31. How would you compare God’s way of defining what is honorable and shameful with that of your world? (Think about the various values you’ve seen in the Old Testament—care of widows, foreigners, and the weak, use and abuse of authority, praise and worship for YHWH alone, etc.—and add what you’ve just read in 1 Corinthians.)
