Theophany sounds like a complicated word, but it’s just a technical theological word for an appearance of God. “Theo” is a Latin prefix referring to God, and “phany” is a Latin suffix meaning “appearance.” When you put the two together you get “appearance of God.” Habakkuk 3 recalls and anticipates the appearance of God in history. We are especially interested here in how Habakkuk’s theophany account engages ancient Near Eastern mythology. Hang on, and you’ll appreciate one of the great themes that runs through the whole Bible.
