The LORD will send upon you curses, confusion, and rebuke, in all you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have forsaken Me . . . The cricket shall possess all your trees and the produce of your ground. The alien who is among you shall rise above you higher and higher, but you will go down lower and lower.
Deuteronomy 28:20, 42-43 NASB

As the Israelites are about to go into the promised land, Moses reminds them that their prosperity is dependent on their fidelity to YHWH. As long as the people look only to YHWH for security and success, they’ll have it. But when they “forsake” YHWH and stray into “evil deeds,” the “cricket will possess” all their vegetation and produce. (“Cricket” is the same as “locust” in other translations.) In Joel, we see the evidence of just such a case. The people have forsaken God and the evidence is in the results. The peoples’ plight confirms Moses’ warning.
