Micah 5:2 NLT reads:

But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, are only a small village among all the people of Judah. Yet a ruler of Israel will come from you, one whose origins are from the distant past.”

Micah describes a ruler who would come during the Assyrian conquest.

Now read Matthew 2:1-12 and then respond to the following question.

  1. Explain how this prophecy was interpreted in the time of Jesus. Note what aspects of the prophecy are clearly in view and which are not.

Continue reading through Matthew 2:13-18, which includes this quote from Jeremiah 31:15 NLT:

This is what the LORD says: “A cry is heard in Ramah—deep anguish and bitter weeping. Rachel weeps for her children, refusing to be comforted—for her children are gone.”

  1. Read the context of both passages and try to describe how this Old Testament passage is predictive in a different way than the one from Micah.
