Curses were predictable forms of judgment—logical consequences, we might say, for rejecting YHWH as the sole source of security and sustenance. The ultimate curse was exile. Moses provides a long and exhaustive list of tragedies that correspond directly to the fate of the people in Lamentations. See the table below for details.

Deuteronomy (ESV)Lamentations (ESV)
And among these nations you shall find no respite, and there shall be no resting place for the sole of your foot. (28:65)She dwells now among the nations, but finds no resting place. (1:3)
He shall be the head, and you shall be the tail. (28:44)Her foes have become the head; her enemies prosper. (1:5)
Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another people. (28:32)Her children have gone away, captives before the foe. (1:5)
You shall go out one way against them and flee seven ways before them. (28:25)They fled without strength before the pursuer. (1:6)
And you shall become a horror, a proverb, and a byword among all the peoples where the LORD will lead you away. (28:37)All who pass along the way clap their hands at you; they hiss and wag their heads at the daughter of Jerusalem. (2:15)
And you shall eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your sons and daughters. (28:53)Should women eat the fruit of their womb, the children of their tender care? (2:20)
A hard-faced nation who shall not respect the old or show mercy to the young. (28:50)In the dust of the streets lie the young and the old. (2:21)
You shall build a house, but you shall not dwell in it. (28:30)Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners. (5:2)
And there shall be no resting place for the sole of your foot. (28:65)Our pursuers are at our necks; we are weary; we are given no rest. (5:5)
