Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. And the LORD, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple . . . He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, so that they may present to the LORD offerings in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.
Malachi 3:1, 3-4 NASB

In the future, a messenger of YHWH will purify the priests, the “sons of Levi,” who will resume their priestly role in a state of purity and righteousness. The offerings of these new priests will be pleasing to God “as in the days of old.”

Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the LORD. He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse.
Malachi 4:5-6 NASB

When this messenger arrives, he will proclaim judgment and call for repentance. Do you recognize this figure from the Gospels? (Hint: He was a prophet from a priestly family and a cousin of the Messiah.)
