Once in response to me saying I did not want my children to attend public school to avoid indoctrination of “the worlds” views I was asked wasn’t I just indoctinerating them with religion. I was able to explain that I want them to have values and a solid foundation as a child of religion so they are better equipped to face troubles and make decisions on their own.

There were many times in school when I had to explain why I did not go and do things that others were doing and to explain it was not because of rules, but out of love that I chose not to go do things.

In 1997 our only child, Preston died at the age of 10. This was the most agonizing time in my life. I was enrolled in graduate school at the time. During this same time, a student at the college was killed. My professor attended both my son’s funeral and the student’s funeral. Later, the professor told me that when she observed me and the mother of the student who was skilled, she knew that I was going to be alright and she also knew that the other mother would not be alright. Later the mother of the student who had died suffered a mental and emotional breakdown. The professor wanted to know why I was able to endure the death of my only child. God allowed me to explain to her that while I was suffering greatly, I was certain of where my child was and that he was eternally well and that I would be with him again. Shortly thereafter, the professor accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior.

When I was in high school. Even though it was a Christian high school, being a “born-again” Christian was not the norm or looked at in a negative way. I wasn’t a preacher but living my life with kindness and love, giving God glory for everything was a great witness to many of my classmates.
