Overview and Objectives
What were the realities of marriage, divorce, and widowhood in first-century Roman Palestine and how can understanding these realities help us better understand the story of the Samaritan woman at the well? In this lesson, Dr. Cohick examines ancient dowry documents and marriage contracts to uncover historical truths about marriage during Jesus’ time. Discover what these truths tell us about the Samaritan woman, and therefore, what we can learn about Jesus through the story of His encounter with her.
When you complete this lesson, you should be able to do the following:
- Describe the social norms concerning marriage in Jesus’ time.
- Explain what we can reasonably conclude about the Samaritan woman’s marital status in light of these social norms.
- Discuss how the reader’s perception of the Samaritan woman changes the meaning of the story.
As you proceed through this lesson have the following question in mind.
It is part of the human experience to live through the ending of a relationship (death, distance, divorce, etc.). Describe a time you faced the end of a relationship. How did that experience change you? How did it impact your relationship with God?
