Jeremiah is not a critical outsider. He suffers with his people and shares in their anguish. His agony over the coming tragedies is in sharp contrast to the oblivious celebrations of others:

I did not sit celebrating
    in the circle of merrymakers;
Under the weight of your hand I sat alone
    because you filled me with rage.
