This lesson focuses on literary structures in the book of Psalms, which are also evident in biblical poetry generally. Regardless of how much or little you may know about literary structure, you should be able to observe some degree of structure in these first three verses of Psalm 1.

Read Psalm 1:1-3.

  1. Look carefully at these three verses and describe any structure you see—even if you don’t know the technical terms. Look for such things as repetition of ideas, contrasts, comparisons, etc. Record all your observations.
