We are going to focus on the prophetic role of Jesus in Luke. How does this relate to his identity as the Savior of the World? It may surprise you to find the precedents for Jesus’ miracles beyond Israel in the Old Testament prophets. Luke is the only Gospel writer who includes Jesus’ inaugural sermon in which he told his Nazareth neighbors that, like Elijah and Elisha, he would be serving Gentiles—sometimes instead of Jews. Before we get started, reread Luke 4:14-30 and Isaiah 61:1-2.
