A major focus in Luke is the juxtaposition of pride and humility in speeches by Jesus. Many of the “lost, last and least” in this Gospel are honored in their low estate. Read the five passages in the top row of the chart above (9:46-48; 12:37; 13:23-30; 14:8-11; 22:24-27), then compare your readings against the bottom row with Jesus’ sayings about humility. 

There’s nothing wrong with seeking excellence. What Jesus is talking about is competing and giving yourself priority at the expense of others.
