The idea of a “mission” or a “movement” sounds like an organized, intentional plan. That’s certainly the case in Acts, but the playbook is in heaven. On earth, movements often look like reactions to circumstances—circumstances like oppression or persecution. In fact, the early church spread just as much by being scattered as they did by following a plan. God’s plan was to move this Jewish movement into gentile territory, something that was very hard for many to accept.

We’re going to be reminded that “dispersion” or scattering is a theme we ran into repeatedly in the Old Testament. And we’ll discover that God continues to reach people who are displaced, refugees, migrants and exiles.
