The early Roman Christian Tertullian once said, “The resurrection of the dead is the hope of Christians. It is this that makes us believers.” The emphasis on personal resurrection in the early church is rooted in the New Testament, in the resurrection of Jesus and in the apostolic letters.

Paul insists on the importance of this idea in 1 Thessalonians. Resurrection is the reason for Christian hope.

Tertullian quoted from: Alfred C. Rush, Death and Burial in Christian Antiquity, 1941, p. 248.

Read 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and 1 Thessalonians 5:10-11.

  1. What reasons does Paul give for hope for believers who face death?
  1. What does he exhort believers to do as a result?
