As we’ve learned in today’s Bible study, we have a role when it comes to work. You’ve put a lot of work into understanding and applying what God has to say about money and possessions to this point. Now it’s time to set some goals to help you continue to work on your financial discipleship journey.

Setting goals will help you determine what is really important to you and help you define where you want to be both personally and financially. Here’s how it works:

1. Download and complete the Goals Worksheet.

2. Don’t limit yourself by your current situation. Many of your goals may be “faith” goals that you’ll have to trust the Lord to provide. So pray and prioritize your goals.

3. One caution: Don’t set completely unrealistic goals. It’s better to accomplish three goals than to become frustrated with 10 unattainable ones.

Compass Commentary

Working hard was and continues to be a good and desirable characteristic, as is knowing when to rest. But as there are today, even in Biblical times, there were people, even believers, who were lazy and wouldn’t work. Working hard allows you to provide for your own needs without relying on someone else to bail you out. Being lazy can even lead you to become a busy-body, sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong. Everyone should work hard and do the best that they can in every task. As good as it is to work hard, its also important to value and schedule some rest. Just as God did during the creation of the world, He rested one day out of seven, and required similar rest of His people. Our bodies and minds need to rest, and the Lord wants us to take time away from the work we do to spend time with Him, reflect on His blessings, and allow ourselves to be re-charged for the work still to be done. Failure to maintain margin in our lives, is not only contrary to God’s design and commandments, it is also unhealthy and unproductive. Work hard but get rest!
