When Jesus returned to his disciples after his resurrection we might have expected him to be mobbed and celebrated like a returning hero. The reality of Jesus’ post-resurrection encounters with disciples was nothing like this. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus’ followers learn of the resurrection in different ways but their reactions are the same—confusion and fear. Interestingly, the recognition of Jesus in each case is prompted by the words of God.
