Compass Commentary

In the area of generosity and giving, there’s one common theme that permeates Biblical instruction on the matter – love! Didn’t Jesus Himself begin the well-known passage in John 3:16 with the words “For God so loved the world, that He gave . . .”? God gave because He loved and provided an example that we should follow. If we make an effort to be generous without first loving, it often reflects a heart of pride, or desire to be noticed and admired. But by loving before we give, our focus is totally on the recipient and not the giver. Paul provides us additional considerations of giving in his letters to the Corinthians. He addresses the concept that giving without love is worthless, and also encourages us to give abundantly, willingly, with purpose and without feeling pressured to do so. Just as a farmer who plants one seed will receive a minimal harvest, so does the giver who gives grudgingly. God wants so much for us to see the benefits of giving, that He will joyfully replenish what we have given with even more, so we can give even more.
