Think about your most serious experience of betrayal. How did it make you feel? Angry and resentful, probably. Did it also make you feel alone? Jesus was left alone by everyone he was close to in the Garden—even his Father in heaven. Then add to that the most physically painful experience the Romans could think of … and the most shameful experience they could create. Then try to imagine that on top of all this, the sin of all humanity was weighing down on Jesus as he hung on the cross.  

In this lesson we confront one of the most profound, most sacred, and most extraordinary events in human history. Let’s not rush through this part of the journey. The events may be familiar—but we stand at the turning point of the entire Bible, and the turning point of your life and mine.
